Learoy Rodrigues SJ
I was in Bamiyan, Afghanistan, for barely a month, conducting a
month-long capacity building programme for our JRS teachers, and
yet these were apostolically probably the most fulfilling days of my Jesuit life.
I was for long inspired, reading of the pioneering work of great Jesuits, Antonio Monserrat and Henry Heras in particular, who dared to venture into that difficult terrain. When JRS in 2005 responded to pressing needs after the Taliban war, I too yearned to be a part of this daring mission. I got to go there finally in 2019.
I’ve had much to cherish. I was glad to open myself up to a distinct culture, a different worldview, especially the hazara way of life. I found the people so warm and hospitable. Every student and teacher was eager to study and be someone in life, all with an aim towards seeing the hazaras grow towards integral growth, better overall education, and hence greater stability in the country. The emphasis on educating girls, peace education, language competency, and life skills was evidence of the JRS thrust towards inclusive and holistic training.
My understanding of Jesuit mission has broadened thanks to Afghanistan. I feel ever grateful to the Society for this opportunity.
And I wait to get back to Afghanistan!
