Can I ever forget the
people of Afghanistan?
In 2003 I had gone for a long-term mission to Cambodia. In late 2004,
I was asked whether I would be prepared to go to Afghanistan. Having worked with Cambodian Refugees since 1980, I just could not say ‘No’.
Can I ever forget the people of Afghanistan? I have often said:
“If you are a true friend of the Afghans they will protect you with their lives.” So true. I remember with gratitude the warmth of friendship that they radiated.
Can I forget Mr Karimi, Director of the Herat Technical High School that we built up together? He had said to me: “My salary is not enough for petrol or for my cigarettes. But, I am a rich man and have enough. I do not have any children of my own. These students are my children and I am doing all for them.” He provided the heating during the winter and other needs and also provided the furniture for his office at the new complex.
The warmth of the staff and the students (boys and girls), the support from the team of Catholic Relief Services and the togetherness in mission with my Jesuit companions keep me going forward today.
